The umava Mountains
The umava Mountains are a densely forested mountain range, which, from time immemorial, has been the natural boundary between Southwest Bohemia and Bavarian. Adjoining the umava Mountains on the north is esk les /the Bohemian Forest/ separated from the former by the Veruby Pass. The highest peaks are Plech /1378 m / near Volary, Boubn /1362 m/ near Vimperk and Jezern stna /the Lake Wall - 1343 m/ near elezn Ruda. In the umava Mountains, one can also find several lakes of glacial origin. The best known are the two located in the vicinity of elezn Ruda ertovo jezero (The Devil's Lake - 1030 m above s.l.) and ern jezero (The Black Lake - 1008 m above s.l.). The umava Mountains and the surrounding area are one of the loveliest spots in the Czech Republic. The mountains with their vast forests provide numerous opportunities for tours and their slopes are excellent for skiing for skilled people and beginners alike. The entire region is a natural reserve and its mountains and valleys make it an ideal place for tours, camping, summer and winter holidays.
