Castle Konopit
45 km south of Prague SUITABLE FOR INCENTIVE TOURISM
The Konopit castle was originally constructed in the 13th century. However, it was totally altered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Archduke Franz Ferdinand dEste, the successor to the Austro-Hungarian throne whose assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 sparked off the World War I. He purchased the castle in 1887. The archduke was an enthusiastic hunter who had shot 300 000 birds and wild animals. In the castle there are rich collections of hunting trophies, historical weapons and armoury /one of the largest in middle Europe/.
Late Gothic sculptures and paintings, porcelain, tapestries, historical furniture and various artefacts that belonged to the royal family can bee seen there as well. The collection of small sculptures and pictures depicting some aspects of the legend of St. George and the dragon is quite remarkable. A large and well-kept English park surrounds the palace.
