Kutn Hora

This medieval town situated 60 km east of Prague used to be an important economical and political centre of the Kingdom of Bohemia for several centuries. Due to the mining of silver and the mint of Prague groshen, it also used to be one of the richest towns of the country. Today, Kutn Hora with its magnificent architectural sights is considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in the Czech Republic.

Since December 1995, the historical centre of the town has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The town of Kutn Hora is dominated by St. Barbara Cathedral founded in 1388. Its grandiose construction was carried out in several stages. The construction was suspended several times due to various reasons and thus it took more than 500 years from the commencement of the construction to finally complete it in 1905. The first architect of the cathedral was Jan Parl - a son of the Prague St. Vitus Cathedral architect. Besides Baroque works of art, the cathedral furnishings include Gothic choir pews decorated with carving of Master John of Nymburk. Another remarkable feature, totally unique in Medieval Art, are the late Gothic frescoes depicting mining topics. The most valuable of these frescoes can be found in the tomb chapel of Michal Smek of Vrchovit, a local businessman. Mural paintings in the Haplsk chapel depict works at the winch as well as the medieval technology of minting. In the slope near the cathedral, a well-preserved remainder of a Gothic Chapel of Corpus Christi build in the latter half of the 14th century can be seen.

Another jewel of Kutn Hora is Vlask dvr founded in the 13th century, which served the purpose of Royal Mint and the residence of the sovereigns during their stays in Kutn Hora.

Another noticeable site is the Ossuary in the Sedlec town district. Originally a two-nave chapel, it is one of the building works of Wenceslas IV construction smeltery. The chapel interior is a kind of a curiosity, as the decoration consists almost exclusively of human bones, originally piled up into pyramids by a half-blind monk. The author of the human bones decoration was a carver Frantiek Rint. The unique decoration of the chapel includes a massive chandelier, goblets, a cross, a monstrance and a Schwarzenberg coat-of-arms, all made of human bones. The complete decoration of the Sedlec Ossuary is estimated to consist of remains of about 40,000 people. The work was created to remind of the transient nature of human life and the fact of death.

We should also mention a building called Hrdek. You may see a permanent exposition there, a part of which is a visit to a medieval silver mine.
